“India’s daughter”- A viewpoint

“India’s Daughter”- a documentary which has caused much uproar in the social media, news  and among people in India and abroad.
People being judgmental, having preconceived notions about the content of the the documentary and giving opinion on something which they haven’t even watched. Nonchalantly expressing views on  whether it should be banned/not banned, whether the documentary creator was  out of her mind and on why we we need to hear from a  rapist. These were some of the  questions which came out of these heated debates. I had similar views as well and thought this is some kind of gimmick to increase TRP ratings and make movie on a subject which for sure would sell like hot cakes.
My 2 cents- I did watch the video. It was not easy but this is what I have to say:

-Documentary creator Leslie herself has been a rape victim so I do not see any hidden agenda behind the making of this movie other than baring out the naked truth behind the male mentality of a majority of the population of our country.
-  More than the rapist comments on what a girl should and should not do, I was more flabbergasted by what educated lawyers in the documentary had to say.
-  The “in your face “message I got out of the doc-  It is not only the uneducated, but even the educated lot who have a very demeaning mentality towards women, how they should behave and how they should be treated.
These men are growing up in a culture/environment where this is what is taught to them and this is what they see around them- right from their uncles, aunties, grandparents, mom , dad, friends, relatives and who not.

-      A girl being born in the family is not as exciting a news as a boy because they will not carry your legacy forward.
-          Only girls cry, boys need to be strong  and brave.
-          Girls need to  be within their limits all the time.
-          Girls need to be careful of people around and how they behave else they invite trouble.
-          Girls need to be always respectful of all around them and not raise their voices.
-          Girls need to dress up appropriately.
-          Girls need to learn all the housework, cooking and other chores which will help them in their          future life.
-          Girls need to be  given just basic education and then married off and not waste time doing further education else they will come off age!!

No rules whatsoever for boys.  Boys are not taught about gender equality, gender sensitivity nor how to treat a women.
There are a lot of other important things which come out of the Nirbhaya case- like why we don’t have any judicial accountability created for Indian courts. This case happened in Dec 2012 but her parents are still doing the rounds of the courts until today and mind you this is a fast track case!!
Like they say- Justice delayed is justice denied!!
I hope the government can take some measures to introduce some kind of accountability and focus on these important issues rather than wasting time on other petty things.
From our side- changing the mindset and mentality of our men is all I can think of as a small measure towards a radical change.
My opinion about this is expressed in something I wrote a  few days after the Nirbhaya case had happened and can be viewed in the link below:
Respect Women, they are not objects to feed your perverted minds !! Remember that one of us carried you in our wombs and  brought you here!!!
Happy Women’s Day!!
